Overcomers through Love
1 John 5:1-2 CSB “1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him. 2This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey his commands.”
Just as a child benefits from the work her mother accomplishes, just as an employee is known by the reputation of his employer, so also are Christians to be known by the One they follow.
John 17 allows us a brief, yet intimate, look into the heart of our Savior as He pours it out to the Father. In this incredible event of prayer and petition from the Son to the Father, we see Jesus pray for three things.
As I read John 17:20, I had a realization that had never occurred to me before: Jesus Christ prayed for ME. I was sitting on a worn out sofa in the middle of the common area in my dorm building, sleep deprived, and cramming for the next day’s test, and I broke. Sobbing all alone in the middle of the room I realized that this Savior, who I had read about a thousand times before, truly loved me and desired that I would not only love Him, but also love all those who knew Him as Savior.
This moment was so tender and kind, and it changed the way I looked at not only my Savior, but also the way I looked at His Bride. Christ says in John 17:23 CSB, “I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me.”
We are to be known by our love for one another, so the world may know the love of Christ which saved us on the cross, and redeemed us to be new creations.
This week, this month, this year, this life, let us love one another so the world may know. 1 John 4:16 CSB says , “And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.”

- He prays to receive the glory that is due Him, so that He can further glorify the Father. Showing the unification of the Trinity, that is to be modeled by the Body of Christ.
- Then Jesus prays for His disciples who He has spent the last three years living alongside, training, and preparing for His imminent departure. It’s a beautiful petition for protection and preparation for those who Jesus loves so dearly.
- Finally, Jesus prays for all those who will come to believe in Him as a result of the disciples He has trained. Once again, this is a powerful glimpse into the heart of a Savior who loves ALL of His creation.
