A Better Tomorrow!
Wisdom won’t solve all of life's mysteries, but it will make life better!
KEY VERSE: Ecclesiastes 7:14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, But in the day of adversity consider: Surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, So that man can find out nothing that will come after him.
· When things are good, be joyful. When they’re not, consider this; God alone knows and has a plan for the future.
Consider This: Life is BETTER when we apply wisdom!
Ecclesiastes 7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one's birth;
1. Virtue is BETTER than Valuables. – Verse 1
Many people will sacrifice their reputation in pursuit of things and bling. Mary of Bethany knew better. She broke the alabaster box to pour the precious ointment on Jesus’ feet. A year’s salary! Judas and his corrupt heart called it a waste. Jesus said that people would acclaim this great act in her honor for eternity. Virtue is better than valuables.
Ecclesiastes 7:2-3 Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart. 3 Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better.
2. Wakes are BETTER than Weddings – Verse 2
The house of mourning is not a reference to funerals. It is the home of the deceased. Likely the place of passing. It is the place of the deepest and most personal grief. Grief causes us to consider. We leave the wedding with a smile, but we leave the wake with an education.
Ecclesiastes 7:5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise Than for a man to hear the song of fools.
3. Corrections are BETTER than Compliments Verse 5
I don’t like to be corrected any more than the next guy. I prefer compliments like anyone else, yet compliments do not compel change. I want compliments, but I need correction. Correction makes me BETTER!
Ecclesiastes 7:8 The end of a thing is better than its beginning; The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
4. Patience is BETTER than Pride Verse 8
Verse 7 talks about how bribes debase the heart. Bribes are short cuts. Bribes appeal to pride in that they want all the benefits without the work; without the delay. Patience is BETTER than Pride.
Ecclesiastes 7:10 Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.
5. Contentment is BETTER than Complaining Verse 10
We all say it… “The good ‘ole days.” We love to celebrate the simplicity of the past. We forget that they were days of struggle too. Time has a way of causing us to complain about the present and glorify the past. We do not do wisely when we ask this question.
CONCLUSION:
Ecclesiastes 7:12 For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.
